Jay Maisel (a photographer that I admire) says that you can't teach someone how to take a photograph.
"I wouldn't dream of telling a person what to shoot, or why to shoot. I try to break down what I think are
the major consituents of a successful picture, and make people aware of them. Light and color are obvious.
Gesture seems to elude most people. Gesture has more to do with the content of a picture, than with form.
Gesture has to do with what is happening in the picture. What is the action? What is the story?
What is the reason for the picture? The tough thing to teach about gesture is to be aware of what is going on around you.
Gesture is everywhere."
